Operator Please

About Yourself:
In just two short years Australia’s hottest new talent have gone from doing trigonometry to scoring an ARIA. It’s been a massive two years!

In 2005 Amandah Wilkinson wanted to enter a battle of the bands competition, but first she needed a band. Operator Please formed.

The former Elanora High School kids that make up Operator Please are: Amandah Wilkinson (19), drummer Tim Commandeur (17), bassist Ashley McConnell (18) and violinist Taylor Henderson (16).

Not only did the band win the competition and a box of donuts… they have been caught in a whirlwind of recording, touring, signing and awards since.

Sure they had the help of MySpace and a generous nod of approval from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, but 19-year-old Amandah Wilkinson says that their achievements are no overnight success.

Since 2005 Operator Please have released independently two EPs (On The Prowl and Cement Cement). In 2006 the band signed with Virgin/EMI Records in Australia and Brille in the UK and went on to record their debut album Yes Yes Vindictive.

But prior to the album release, the buzz reached fever pitch in the UK with the likes of the #1 Club NME Chart for Just A Song About Ping Pong, so Operator Please took to the stage at the famed Reading & Leeds Festivals; they played to a packed tent both days and made NME's top 10 band's to watch. Operator Please also joined the Levis ‘One To Watch’ Tour and the NME Freshers Tour with the mighty Go! Team.

Meanwhile in Australia, Operator Please completed a run of dates that included a show stopping spot at Splendour In The Grass and national supports with Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs.

Their hotly anticipated album Yes Yes Vindictive was recorded in Gosford NSW with legendary UK producer Simon Barnicott, who has worked with some of music’s heavy weights including Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian. The album was released in Australia in November 2007.

Yes Yes Vindictive is an artful mash of high-energy electro pop with a couple of ballads thrown into the mix. The single, Just A Song About Ping Pong, quite literally is a song about ping-pong, born one night when Wilkinson was walking home. “Every time I hear someone say, “that song is about sex” I just want to piss myself laughing”, she says. “I think it’s totally hilarious. How can you get it wrong, it’s in the line?”

Other songs on the record include Leave It Alone and Yes Yes, both sort of having digs at the music industry. “When you are in this industry there is so many people who have an opinion about what you do. The song Leave It Alone comes from me saying leave me alone and don’t try and change anything.”

Yes Yes Vindictive opens with the seamless energy of Zero Zero – a crescendo of rocking guitar licks that remind of the kookiness of the B52s. The violin strings interrupt casually but forcefully while the keyboards bounce back to the 1980s. Cringe is a warm and fuzzy pop number that hints of 60s retro feel. “Cringe is about being put in awkward social situations or being new to something like a group of people,” says Wilkinson. “There is a weird shy awkwardness when you meet someone new. It’s about being thrust in a situation you have no control over.”

The piano pop driven fourth single ‘Two For My Seconds’ is released digitally on June 21.

Fans and critics went wild for Yes Yes Vindictive, so wild that last year the band picked up their first ARIA Award for the hit single, Just A Song About Ping Pong. Nominated in 2 categories, Operator Please won Breakthrough Artist - Single for Just A Song About Ping Pong.'They also gave a blistering performance of the same song later in the evening...one of the real musical highlights of the night.

“My success is kind of like getting back at those people who picked on me at school,” says front woman Amandah Wilkinson.

Wilkinson has been inspired by an eclectic mix of powerful female singers including Dusty Springfield, Lauryn Hill and Karen O, to which Wilkinson adds “she’s a total siren”.

Since their ARIA win the band have been in high demand on home turf and abroad. After ripping up their 2007 UK tour, our Aussie triumphs returned home to get amongst the summer festival action, playing to massive crowds at Homebake, Southbound and Falls Festival.

The band also signed a record deal with AVEX, Japan’s biggest record label which is home to the likes of the Arctic Monkeys. AVEX will release the album in August following a May tour.

In early 2008 Operator Please returned to the UK for the March release of Yes Yes Vindictive, which was then released in Europe in April. During this time they played headline shows in Italy, Germany and The Netherlands. They also played the NME Night at London’s famous Koko club, supported Foals on a sold out tour of France and have been confirmed for a number of UK summer festivals including The Great Escape.

After returning home for a string of national headline tour dates in April, the band are currently on tour in the UK with Futureheads and Lightspeed Champion and will also perform at Glastonbury. They will return to Australia via the Fuji Rock Festival to perform on the main stage at Splendour.
